Certified Transmission Mid Atlantic

Need a new transmisison?

Certified Transmission Mid-Atlantic
shops specialize in transmissions of all types: car transmissions, truck transmissions, RV transmissions and more. We are automatic transmission, manual transmission (stick shift) and drive train experts. We service and repair front wheel drive vehicles, rear wheel drive vehicles, 4 wheel drive vehicles, all wheel drive vehicles. electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles..

About Automatic Transmissions:

Rebuilt Transmissions: Many transmission shops repair failed automatic transmissions by rebuilding them. That means disassembling the transmission and replacing the failed or broken parts, then re-assembling the transmission and installing it back in the vehicle, in many cases, without testing its performance in any way.

The automatic transmission rebuilding process requires technicians specialized in automatic transmission repair. Because of the complexity and different automatic transmission models, it takes a person years to learn how to rebuild a wide variety of transmission models and brands.

The transmission rebuilding process also takes time, lots of it. If you leave your vehicle at a transmission rebuilding shop, you can expect the rebuild to take from one and up to two weeks. This is time you will be without the use of your vehicle and usually, only the failed components are replaced.

Determining which parts of the transmission have failed can only occur after the transmission has been disassembled. Normally, it is at this point that the actual cost to you can be known. The difference in cost from the estimate to actual can vary considerably depending on the expertise of the person performing the diagnostic before you bring your vehicle in for the rebuild.

Rebuild warranties are usually for 12 months or 12,000 miles and are not nationwide.

Remanufactured Transmissions: Remanufacturing is far more than fixing broken parts. Every transmission that comes into our plant is hand-disassembled by an experienced technician and thoroughly checked, piece by piece.

Every part is cleaned, measured and inspected for correct tolerances and specifications.

Anything that isn't up to factory-new standards is either re-machined or replaced with a new part. The factory stocks $1.5 million in parts inventory and owns numerous precision industrial CNC machines, so even an out-of-stock transmission can be finished in a few days.

The factory uses quality parts from names like Borg Warner, Raybestos, Seal Power and Trans Tec. You get proven, robust parts in your transmission when you buy from Certified. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that whether its a clutch plate or a gasket, we're installing components that keep on working under the toughest conditions.

Our transmissions are remanufactured with the latest OEM updates.

As manufacturers update their transmissions, they are able to fix issues with the original design. Our engineering team keeps track of these changes and implements them in every transmission we remanufacture. That way, even if you have an old car or truck, your transmission will be up-to-date with the latest design.

All transmissions come with a remanufactured torque converter, balanced and tested with the transmission.

We pair every transmission with a torque converter, so you're getting a matched set that has been tested as one unit. This prevents many performance problems that can show up after the unit is installed in your vehicle.

Each transmission/converter pair is pre-tested on a state-of-the-art computerized dyno.

The cost of shipping a used transmission to the rebuild factory, replacing all the parts that can wear then back to the shop is greater than the cost of in-shop rebuilding, but the end result is a far higher quality transmission for you. And, the time savings are significant. Your vehicle can be fitted with a remanufactured transmission in as little as one day.

Overall, the quality and the time saved result in a better purchase decision. The warranty periods are longer as well. Our remanufactured transmission warranty is 36 months or 5,000 miles.

Because the transmissions have been remanufactured at our facility, the warranty can be honored nation-wide. Often, this is not an option for the small rebuild shops.

The member shops of Certified Transmission Mid-Atlantic have all done in-shop rebuilding but have long since stopped, in favor of the enhanced quality and dependability of the remanufactured transmissions (reman's for short).

If you purchase a transmission from a dealer, you will be purchasing a remanufactured transmission because actually new transmissions are not available from the manufacturers. The warranties are seldom over 12,000 miles or 1 year from the dealer..

Note: Many front wheel drive cars have the differential integrated with the automatic transmission. We re manufacture both the transmission and the differential when we work on these models.

Used transmissions: Sometimes transmissions fail at the worst possible time financially requiring a lower cost alternative to remanufacturing or rebuilding. Used transmissions are purchased from wrecking yards, inspected for leaks or dry seals and tested on the dynomometer to be working correctly.

These transmissions, especially the newer models, come from vehicles involved in an accident that "totaled" the vehicle. This means the insurance company determined the cost to repair that vehicle was more than the vehicle was worth.

Purchasing a used transmission involves risk. If the accident was a front-end collision, the engine may have been forced backward into the torque converter and transmission, causing a slight mis-alignment or internal compression of parts. Over time, if this transmission is installed in your vehicle, it can lead to premature failure.

If the used transmission came from a vehicle in a hot, dry climate, the seals dry out. They often shrink just enough not to leak at the time of testing but they can start leaking transmission fluid in a short time.

Another factor to consider is that the mileage on the used transmission is unknown. A transmission with 30,000 miles on it will be more reliable than one with 160,000. That information doesn't come with a used transmission.

The usage of the transmission by its original owner is also unknown. Was it used in a high mileage well maintained fleet vehicle, a low mileage "little old lady", or a wild ride teenager. In short, you are gambling that a used transmission will last long enough to make it a good buying decision.

The lower cost of these used transmissions is enhanced over a rebuilt transmission in that, like the remanufactured transmission, if it is in-stock you don't have to wait weeks to get your vehicle back on the road.
